ABOUT THE AUTHOR

He was born on October 10th, 1908 at Olcnava. He finished an elementary school in Spišské Vlachy. Later, he studied at the grammar school in Levoča, and after four years he moved to the grammar school in Spišská Nová Ves, in order to become a pupil of there working Jozef Hanula. In the years 1926-1928 he studied at real grammar school in Košice (the seventh and eighth grade). At the same time he attended evening courses of Eugen Krón, and private training with Elemír Halásza-Hradil in the years 1927-1928, also in Košice. In the years 1928-1932 he studied law at the Law Faculty of the Comenius University in Bratislava, which he has completed with a doctorate. In the years 1932-1934 he performed the judicial practice in the Regional Court in Košice and the District Court in Kežmarok. Until 1936 he held administrative practice at some central offices in Prague, participated in the lectures of art history at the Philosophy Faculty of Charles University. In the years 1936-1938 he conducted basic military service in Beroun. In the year 1938, he again boards the legal-administrative services at Central Office in Prague. In the years 1939-1948 he was, due to governmental policy changes, moved from Prague to Bratislava, where he exercised the legal practice at the ministry post department. In Bratislava, he was trained artistically; in the years 1941-1945, he studied the fine-arts department of the Slovak Technical University in Bratislava with Maximilian Gustav Schurmann and Gustáv Mallý. Simultaneously, he studied art history and archaeology at the Philosophy Faculty of the Comenius University in Bratislava. In 1948, he became the Director of the East-Slovakian Museum in Košice. He gave up the duty of the Director of the Museum in 1954, to be able to fully devote to fine art. He pursued to landscaping, in which he focused on Spiš. In 1978 he was awarded the title of National artist. He died on December 2nd, 1984 in Košice.

ON CREATION

Jozef Fabini was focused on landscape painting since the beginning of his creation. He created his own fine-art programme, in which he captured a particular landscape of Eastern Slovakia, with all the beauties and architectural gems with a deeper inner content. In this way he was expressing the love to his native country, admiration for the monuments of the Spiš towns. The creation of the Master Fabini can be divided into several parts. In the beginning it was a significant influence of the Krón´s school, where its central motif became some little gloomy alleys of Košice and Krompachy. Later, his attention was focused on natural scenes from the East-Slovakian region. Since the mid-50s years of the 20th century he focused his creation on Spiš and to capturing of panoramas of the High Tatras and Košice.
