“Art is like a mirror, you only see yourself; but making art means making an invisible part of yourself visible.”
The exhibition, the first joint show by these two artists in Slovakia, is an intermedia dialogue between photography, object art and installations in a wide-ranging semantic content complemented by a presentation of contemporary Central European photography. The visual poetry of Nadia Rovderová, evoking the fundamental elements of the psyche in the form of “photographic paintings”, is contrasted with the objects and experimentation of Suzanne Pastor (USA/CZ), whose works layer time and space in three-dimensional assemblages which invoke a freedom of form and material. The project is part of the Dvojice / Couples dramaturgical cycle of exhibitions.
An American with German roots who now lives in Prague, Suzanne Pastor is a multimedia artist, photographer, curator and the co-founder and first director of the Prague House of Photography. With humour and a certain degree of detachment, she meditates on a life spent immersed in the world of art, the limits of the photographic medium, but also on those closest to her and the meaning of life in cycles of original photograms, assemblages, photography books, objects and installations. Her technical mastery is applied to combinations of photography with other materials such as transparent films and glass. She probes interpretations of “la dolce vita” from the perspective of psychology, a subject which, together with photography, she studied in the USA.
Nadia Roverová is a Czech-Slovak curator, publicist and photographer, and she is also the founder and owner of the Art in Box gallery in Prague. Born and raised under the Tatras in the Spiš region, she has been living and working in Prague since 1989. In her expressive “photo-paintings”, she seeks out remarkable, almost fateful subtexts in the seemingly ordinary; the resulting works evoke the fundamental elements of the psyche as formulated by Carl Jung. She uses photography to examine personal and social identities – as intimate pictorial diaries, or as family or historical chronicles. Her works also reflect the development of the medium of photography from analogue black and white to colour photography, to digital colour photos through experimentation with scanned images or to the virtual photography of Facebook and Instagram.
